Grantee Spotlight - Women's Wellness Retreat at Grass Lake Sanctuary
The 3-day, life-balancing, Women’s Wellness Retreat for Breast Cancer Survivors at Grass Lake Sanctuary, is designed to help women who have completed their breast cancer treatment – whether that was 1 year or 10 years ago – to be open to new possibilities of wellness. The 145 acre non-profit retreat, located in Manchester, Michigan, is dedicated to helping individuals and families re-establish life-balancing connections with nature, healthy relationships, creativity from the heart, healthy food, and therapeutic massage.
If you are, or if you know a woman who lives in Clinton, Eaton, Ingham, Jackson, Livingston, Shiawassee or Washtenaw counties, have been diagnosed with Stage I, II, or III breast cancer, have completed active treatment, and are interested in taking the next steps toward wellness, you may qualify for this highly restorative 3-day program.
“I was afraid of sad stories. I didn’t want another support group where I would be around the energy of struggle. Instead… I learned how to grow. I opened up to others. It helped me as a person.” - Lynn
The program addresses the need for increased psychosocial support for breast cancer survivors. According to an article published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, social well-being during the first year after a breast cancer diagnosis may have a beneficial effect on cancer outcomes. (Epplein M, Zheng Y, Zheng W et al. Quality of life after breast cancer diagnosis and survival. Journal of Clinical Oncology. Early online publication December 20, 2010.)
FULL scholarships are available for uninsured, underinsured or low-income women, and are provided through a grant from the Mid-Michigan Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®! The retreats will be held in July and August; please call 734-408-1552 or visit http://womenswellnessatgrasslake.org/ for eligibility information and to register.

Ride for the Cure®
The 2nd annual Komen Mid-Michigan Ride for the Cure is designed to make a BIG, BOLD IMPACT. The Ride features three routes - 30, 60, or 100 miles and with every mile traveled and every dollar raised we move closer to the Komen vision of a world without breast cancer. In addition to a registration fee, Riders must commit to raise a minimum of $500 to participate in the event.
The Ride for the Cure® event has special meaning to Tracy Weaver, 16 year breast cancer survivor and co-chair of the Ride. “My children were 3, 7, and 8 when I was diagnosed; having to tell them that I had breast cancer and explain what that meant is something that no mother should ever have to go through,” says Weaver. “I support Susan G. Komen for the Cure because I truly believe that we will have a world without breast cancer we will not have to have those conversations with our children anymore. Ride for the Cure is a new, fun way to support Komen Mid-Michigan and all the wonderful work they are doing in this community.”
The minimum of $500 that each rider commits to raise could provide 5 low cost mammograms to women right in our communities that would otherwise not have access to this crucial screening. What an incredible IMPACT!
